Description

On 5 and 6 July, the former Galp refinery in Matosinhos will open its doors to the community, as part of the 10th edition of Open House Porto. This infrastructure, whose building has Estado Novo architectural features, was built in the late 1960s and officially opened in 1970. In an industrial city of around 240 hectares, several specialised engineering factories ensured oil refining and the supply of essential raw materials to the country for more than half a century. These guided tours offer the opportunity to get to know the refinery from the inside, now decommissioned and with demolition work underway. Galp will promote the regeneration of this vast area of Matosinhos in close liaison with the Matosinhos City Council, the CCDR-N and other local and national organisations with a view to building a new ecosystem dedicated to innovation, technology and the energies of the future. This is a legacy that the company aims to leave to the region and the country, in what it hopes will be the largest and most significant urban regeneration project in Portugal in the coming decades.
