Description
The Leixões Cruise Terminal was created as part of the Strategic Port Development Plan in 2004. The building is a landmark on the south quay of the Port of Leixões, which is positioned as a gateway to the northern region. The new quay was inaugurated in April 2011 and is now 340 m long, enabling it to accommodate large cruise ships, in line with the current development of the world’s shipowners in the construction of these vessels. In 2024, the Port of Leixões received a total of 152 cruise ships and around 196,000 passengers, an increase of around 32% in both ships and passengers. In particular, the Cruise Terminal at the Port of Leixões welcomed 108 cruise ships and more than 170,000 passengers. This building is a multifunctional facility because, in addition to housing the Cruise Terminal, it also houses the Interdisciplinary Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR) of the University of Porto. CIIMAR is a leading research and advanced training institution working at the frontier of ocean knowledge and innovation. With more than 300 employees of various nationalities, this institution runs an extensive outreach program aimed at all sectors of society. The habitable roof of the Leixões Cruise Terminal is an audience for the most extraordinary spectacle: the view over the ocean. As well as guided tours on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, we invite you to watch the sunset from the roof of this building on Saturday, between 7pm and 9pm.
