Description
The Leixões Cruise Terminal was created as part of the Strategic Port Development Plan in 2004. The building is a landmark on the south quay of the Port of Leixões, which is positioned as a gateway to the northern region. The new quay was inaugurated in April 2011 and is now 340 metres long, enabling it to accommodate large cruise ships, in line with the current development of the world’s shipowners in the construction of these vessels. In 2023, the terminal received 116 cruise ships and 149,000 passengers, having doubled its activity in just over a decade. This building is a multifunctional facility because, as well as housing the Leixões Cruise Terminal, it also houses two research institutions: the Interdisciplinary Centre for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR) and the Science and Technology Park of the Sea, both of the University of Porto. CIIMAR is a leading research and advanced training institution working at the frontier of ocean knowledge and innovation. With 661 employees of 32 nationalities, it runs an extensive outreach programme aimed at all sectors of society. The habitable roof of the Leixões Cruise Terminal is an audience for the most extraordinary spectacle: the view of the ocean. As well as guided tours on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, we invite you to watch the sunset from the roof of this building on Saturday, between 7pm and 9pm.
