Description
The residential building on Rua Roberto Ivens, in Matosinhos, arose from the meeting of four families who came together to build their homes: two three-bedroom flats, a two-bedroom flat and a one-bedroom flat, all overlapping and with equivalent areas. The building’s plot defines the orientation of the street frontage to the east and the street frontage to the west, indicating the organisation of the house’s spaces: the bedroom areas face onto the street frontage, benefiting from greater silence and morning light, the social areas face onto Rua Roberto Ivens, benefiting from evening light. Hierarchically, the dwellings prioritise the maximisation of social areas over private ones. To this end, the floor plans are designed from back to front: the bedrooms parallel to the façade with the minimum satisfactory depth, the stairwell and lift with the minimum regulatory widths, the service bathrooms with the minimum reasonable width, the living rooms with the maximum possible depth. The living rooms thus result in generous spaces measuring approximately 11 metres by 5 metres facing the tops of the plane trees on Rua Roberto Ivens, where the living, dining and kitchen areas are juxtaposed. In an attempt to reconcile the integrity of these spaces with their enjoyment from the outside, the façades accommodate a system of sash windows that retract below the height of the parapet, allowing the rooms to be transformed into balconies - since balconies are, after all, nothing more than completely open rooms.
