Description
Conservas Pinhais & C.ª Lda., founded in 1920, occupies a building dating from 1923 and enlarged in 1945 as part of Licínio Guimarães’ urbanisation plan for Areal do Prado. This space preserves the traditional and artisanal production of tinned fish - with special emphasis on sardines - while at the same time carefully conserving the building and the company’s production legacy, remaining as faithful as possible to the original. The manual preparation of ingredients, such as bay leaves, and the artisanal production of tomato pulp ensure the authenticity, quality and longevity of Pinhais products. The towers on the corners of the building reveal influences from English industrial architecture, while the main atrium, dominated by a spiral staircase, conveys a material nobility that leads to the office, where the atmosphere remains anchored in the past. Traditions are also maintained, such as the ringing of the bell, which marks the rhythm of the working day, under the protective gaze of Our Lady of Fatima. Since 2021, with the creation of the Museu Vivo Conservas Pinhais Factory Tour, it has been possible to take guided tours of the historic building, learning about the history of the brand and all the stages of artisanal canning production, culminating in a product tasting. This immersive tour invites you to discover the know-how, values and living memory of one of Portugal’s most emblematic canneries.
