Description

This fort hides in its interior what is left of the renaissance palace and the abbey church that Dom Miguel da Silva, Bishop of Viseu, built there in the first half of the 16th century to be his home and place of worship. In truth, these two architectural elements are an integral part of a wider set that Dom Miguel da Silva planned and had projected through an Italian architect Francesco de Cremona (that, certainly, he brought with him from Rome) and that forever marked the configuration of that place that they both founded. In the second half of the 16th century, Dom Miguel da Silva’s palace was integrated in the fort erected by the court that, in its interior, hides this History. The tiles of the church’s nave were taken out and the new one was built from the walls of the pre-existing church, in other words, the church exists today in its absence, open sky, converted in an inner patio of the fortress.
