Description
The new wing of the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art opened to the public in October 2023, and was named the Álvaro Siza Wing in honour of its famous author. At Serralves, Álvaro Siza designed the Museum of Contemporary Art, in 1999, the Manoel de Oliveira Cinema House, in 2019, the Gardeners’ House, in 2021, he was responsible for the restoration of the Serralves House, in 2021, and he designed the Museum’s new extension, in 2023. The new wing has three floors and around 4,000m2 of construction, which represents an increase in the exhibition area of 40 per cent and an increase in the archive area of 75 per cent. This extension is indeed timely, as the museum will be visited by more than one million one hundred thousand people in 2023, compared to 80 thousand visitors in 1999.
