Description
Located in Moreira da Maia, LIPOR II is an essential infrastructure for the sustainable management of urban waste in the Porto Metropolitan Area. Opened in 2000, it serves eight municipalities - Espinho, Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Porto, Póvoa de Varzim, Valongo and Vila do Conde. The complex comprises two main units: the Energy Recovery Plant and the landfill, which has a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) with tertiary treatment (ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis). The plant treats around 1,100 tonnes of non-recyclable waste a day and transforms it into electricity. With two treatment lines, it has an annual capacity of 400,000 tonnes and provides the electricity grid with around 165,000MWh per year, enough energy to supply a population equivalent to 150,000 inhabitants. The Landfill receives the by-products of incineration, such as slag and treated ash, while the Wastewater Treatment Plant ensures the proper treatment of wastewater. It also maintains an ongoing environmental, psychosocial and public health monitoring programme, reinforcing its strategic role in building a more sustainable future for the municipalities it serves.
