Description
In Largo do Ouro there is an isolated volume that looks like a small kiosk or a sentry box. The volume, topped by a kind of crown, is the door to an underground room, designed to house a Shone expeller. The station, which is still in operation, is part of the sewerage project that Porto City Council began to draw up in 1896, based on the waste injection system patented at the end of 1870 by London contractors Hughes & Lancaster. With tiled walls and access from a spiral cast-iron staircase, the room is announced by the sentry box and an ‘ornamental column’ for ventilation. The simultaneous presence of these two architectural elements elsewhere in the city always hides a room like this one. (Joana Couceiro e Nuno Valentim, OHP’19)
