Description

A modernist building from 1958, designed by José Carlos Loureiro, the Marta Ortigão Sampaio House opened to the public in 1996, following a donation to the municipality in 1978. Marta Ortigão Sampaio (1897-1978), the daughter of Estela de Souza and Vasco Ortigão Sampaio, a famous collector from Porto, was the maternal niece of the painters Aurélia de Souza and Sofia de Souza and was born into a privileged context of contact with artistic practice. The House-Museum evokes the atmosphere that surrounded the life of this Porto bourgeois family, presenting collections of paintings, jewellery, a library specialising in art, pieces of furniture of French, English and Indo-Portuguese influence and other decorative arts pieces. A highlight is the collection of jewellery for personal use, with nearly three hundred pieces from the late 17th to the 20th century. In the garden you can see carved stones that belonged to the vanished monastery of S. Bento de Avé-Maria and a small lake surrounded by various botanical species, especially magnolias and an Atlas cedar. (Graça Correia and Joel Cleto, OHP’22)
