Description
House 61 belongs to the first phase of the Bouça housing estate, designed in the 1970s by Álvaro Siza as part of the SAAL process. Having undergone many alterations, the house has reached the present day with few traces of its first life. Since it wasn’t possible to ‘repeat’ it, it had to be replaced or reproposed. Most of the (re)proposals had already been made in 2006, when the complex was finalised in its definitive relationship with the city. Three decades after the end of SAAL, the new typologies brought revisions: the materials were updated, the dimensions retouched and the use of spaces made more flexible. The decisions in the refurbishment of this house in 2023 are in the same spirit, borrowing some tiles or a sliding door. Certain replacements were made. However, we can’t resist pointing out that we can still read the original typology, an ambitious exercise in modernity, a fresh delight from those years. (Nuno Reis Pereira)
