Description
Built in 1908, in what was then the New Carmelitas neighbourhood, the building became linked to Porto’s culture when it housed the ‘Centro Musical e Salão Bechstein de Raymundo de Macedo’ - a commercial and cultural space promoted by this pianist, one of the great promoters of the Porto Conservatory of Music. With its eclectic architecture, the building is part of a period of construction transition, where traditional systems of stone masonry, wooden beams and partition walls are joined by technological innovations, such as cast iron pillars and metal profiles - which you can see on this visit to the work in progress. The building will be returned to the city, recovering its architectural qualities (formal structure, spatial distribution logic), constructive values (traditional systems and decorative elements) and programme uniqueness - restoring the ground floor as an extension of the public space for cultural purposes of the Livraria Lello.
