Description

In the 19th century, municipal slaughterhouses functioned as a fundamental instrument for the health of the urban environment and its inhabitants, which is why they were located on the outskirts of cities, usually in large buildings. The Old Industrial Slaughterhouse of Porto ceased to function in the 1990s and was abandoned for decades, until its reconversion and requalification began in 2022. This project is one of the main actions to revitalise the eastern part of the city, in conjunction with other structuring projects such as the Campanhã Intermodal Terminal, the Dragão Stadium and Praça da Corujeira, in a priority development area for the current municipal executive. In 2015, Porto City Council refused to sell this municipal asset, as the previous executive had advocated, and began the process of defining an intervention project for the Slaughterhouse, signalling the potential of this equipment to serve the city. The work currently underway includes the complete conversion of the complex and the construction of new buildings, as well as 5,500 m2 of public and wooded outdoor spaces. The 20,500,000 m2 of construction will necessarily be dedicated to a multifunctional and multipurpose programme, with a diverse cultural, creative, economic and social offer. The municipality will have 8,000 square metres to create a new extension to the Porto Municipal Gallery, a collection and deposit of works of art, a space dedicated to artistic and community practices, municipal workshops and an educational space. The remaining buildings will be used for offices, commercial and catering spaces. A pedestrian and cycle bridge will also be created over the VCI, linking the Slaughterhouse to the Dragão metro station. (Teresa Novais and Margarida Quintã, OHP’24)
