Description
The original Convent of Corpus Christi, built in 1345, was situated a little closer to the River Douro. Due to the floods, a new building was erected in the 17th century at a slightly higher elevation. It includes the convent chapel with an octagonal floor plan designed by Pantaleão Vieira and the high choir commissioned by Prioress Catarina in 1680 from master carpenter Domingos Lopes. The space is decorated with high-quality carvings with plant designs and the ceiling, divided into 49 coffered ceilings, depicts saints from both the Dominican Order and other orders, with the fifteen central panels alluding to the life and death of Jesus. The recent restoration work has helped to give visibility to one of the city’s best-kept treasures. (Graça Correia and Joel Cleto, OHP’22)
