Description

The way we visit Port wine cellars (and other wine production centres) has changed profoundly in recent years. The growing wine tourism market and the search for a ‘total experience’ now involves seeing the production processes in their most authentic form, tasting the different wines and understanding their characteristics and, if possible, getting in touch with the architecture where they were historically produced - without neglecting the necessary architectural ‘aggiornamento’ that makes the experience more remarkable. Cockburn’s Caves, restored by architect Luís Loureiro (following on from the Grahams Caves) are another good example of ‘transformation in continuity’ - a restoration that is attentive to the material and immaterial values involved, which densifies the visit with layers of knowledge, history and narrative, always supported by a contemporary architectural proposal in a heritage context. (Joana Couceiro and Nuno Valentim, OHP’19)
