Description
The Serra do Pilar Monastery is now the barracks of the Portuguese Army’s 5th Artillery Regiment. Its defensive vocation and occupation is evident due to its location and, today, its size and historical representation. In 1809, it received the Duke of Wellington’s troops who, from the south bank, without the Ponte das Barcas, which had disappeared during the conflict, prepared the defeat and withdrawal of the French troops, a victory celebrated in the Monument to the Heroes of the Peninsular War. Later, in the midst of the Portuguese Civil War, during the Siege of Oporto of 1832-1833, the victory of the liberals was witnessed and the vanquished fled, setting fire to the Port wine warehouses. 17,374 barrels of wine and 533 of brandy were lost. King Maria II recognised its importance in 1835 and decreed that it be classified as a 1st Class War Square. (Inês Moreira and João Paulo Rapagão, OHP’18)
