Description
Not far from the new centre of Maia, Eduardo Souto Moura designed this collective housing building that houses the Centre, which has flats and commercial spaces on the ground floor. The rectangular block has two central nuclei for vertical circulation and infrastructures, allowing for a flexible layout of the rest of the floor area. From the outside, the entire prism is covered with aluminium shutters, thus obtaining different “compositions”: the building can look like a mute, abstract box on which the sun shines, or come to life when some of the windows are opened. The east façade includes the two entrances to the flats, two commercial spaces, the condominium room and access to the garage, while the west façade has only one access to a commercial space. The ground floor is where João Álvaro Rocha set up his office and today we find his extraordinary collection of work. (Graça Correia and Joel Cleto, OHP’22)
