Description

Women were present at one of the most important technological revolutions of the 19th century - the invention of photography. However, their recognition, both as professional photographers and as amateurs, has been belated. Since the 1850s, they have used photography for self-representation, as a hobby, founded commercial studios or continued family businesses, performing various technical functions in photographic laboratories. This exhibition is the result of research and presents, for the first time, the work of three prominent Portuguese amateur photographers, highlighting their relevance. Margarida Relvas and Mariana Relvas, respectively the daughter and second wife of renowned photographer Carlos Relvas, and Maria da Conceição de Lemos de Magalhães, who in this period developed an exceptional photographic oeuvre, revealing the shift from a romantic aesthetic to international photographic Pictorialism. The exhibition presents an unprecedented set of original proofs of their work and a diversity of techniques and genres, along with publications and correspondence from different public and private collections. The aim is to publicize and disseminate the work of these authors, bringing them out of the shadows of the archive and inscribing their journey, so many years later, in the history of photography. This project is the result of a partnership between the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea/Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, E.P.E. and the Museu e Bibliotecas do Porto/Municipality of Porto.
